Screw Compressor or Piston Compressor? Which Technology Is Right for Your Application?
Not every application requires a screw compressor. Find out when an oil-free piston compressor may be the better choice.

In many industries, screw compressors are regarded as the standard choice for professional compressed air applications.
However, not every application requires several hundred or even thousands of litres of compressed air per minute. In reality, the air demand of many machines, systems and devices is significantly lower. Many applications require clean compressed air, continuous S1 duty and flow rates between 50 and 300 L/min. In this performance range, a high-quality oil-free piston compressor can often be the more economical solution.
Screw Compressors Excel at High Flow Rates
Screw compressors are the preferred choice wherever large volumes of compressed air are required continuously. They are commonly used in central compressed air systems and manufacturing facilities with a consistently high air demand. For applications requiring particularly high air quality, oil-free screw compressors are also available.
Correct Sizing Is More Important Than Compressor Technology
When selecting a compressor for industrial, mechanical engineering or energy applications, the discussion often starts with the compressor technology. However, the first step should always be to determine the actual compressed air requirement, how consistent the demand is, and what level of air quality, installation space and maintenance is required.
Applications such as instrument air, control air, laboratory equipment, measuring and testing systems, OEM equipment, beverage systems and smaller production cells often operate within a performance range where an oil-free piston compressor can be an excellent choice. Continuous operation is not, in itself, a reason to rule out this technology.
Additional Benefits of Oil-Free Piston Compressors at Low to Medium Flow Rates
Where both a screw compressor and an oil-free piston compressor are technically suitable in terms of required flow rate, it is worth taking a closer look at the operating profile.
Oil-free piston compressors are compact, robust and relatively easy to integrate. They are particularly well suited to decentralised applications where clean compressed air is required intermittently or at varying intervals. They can also operate efficiently in start-stop mode, making them ideal for applications with fluctuating compressed air demand.
Not Every Oil-Free Compressor Is a Suitable Alternative
An oil-free piston compressor is only a viable alternative to a screw compressor if it has been engineered to a high standard and is designed for continuous operation. Robust engineering, reliable performance and correct sizing for the actual flow requirement are the key factors.
For decades, Dürr Technik has been developing oil-free compressors and compressor systems for applications where clean compressed air, outstanding reliability and continuous operation are essential. The portfolio ranges from compact compressor units for laboratory and OEM applications to powerful compressors and complete compressor systems for industrial, energy and other demanding continuous-duty applications.
A wide range of product series and system configurations is available to meet different applications and performance requirements. The Dürr Technik Product Finder allows users to quickly filter and compare compressors and compressor systems by flow rate, pressure or supply voltage, making it easy to identify the solution that best matches their application.
