Drying endoscopes and central sterile supply department (CSSD) instruments with oil-free compressed air

Following cleaning, in manual reprocessing an important step is the hygienic drying of medical instruments and endoscopes using oil-free compressed air. Drying endoscopes and central sterile supply department (CSSD) instruments is particularly important, as there is a very high risk of bacterial growth if they are stored whilst still damp. Even a small amount of residual moisture can lead to recontamination by bacteria in the lumens and channels of the instruments. To prevent recontamination, it is therefore recommended that, following cleaning, disinfection and rinsing during gastrointestinal endoscopy, the internal cavities and external surfaces of fibre-optic or video endoscopes, as well as medical instruments, be blown dry hygienically using oil-free compressed air.

According to the Robert Koch Institute and the German Medical Association, this plays an important role. The drying of endoscopes following manual reprocessing, as well as the drying of medical instruments using oil-free compressed air, is also recommended by the independent ‘Working Group on Instrument Reprocessing’ (AKI).
