HYDROGEN FILLING STATION

Oil-free compressors for hydrogen refuelling stations

Compressed air for valve technology and control processes

Hydrogen refuelling stations require compressed air to operate pneumatic valves and control processes. Typically, this involves clearly defined switching operations and recurring load cycles during plant operation. The compressed air is used in particular as control air.

Whilst screw or turbo compressors are used for very high flow rates, reciprocating compressors are particularly suitable for clearly defined pressure ranges and medium flow rates. High-pressure compressors are used for the actual hydrogen refuelling process.

Oil-free piston compressors from Dürr Technik are particularly suitable for hydrogen refuelling stations, as they supply compressed air free of oil and thus enable a clean compressed air supply for valves and control systems. They are designed for continuous operation and cyclical load profiles, thereby ensuring reliable operation.

Thanks to their compact design and various IP protection ratings, the compressors can be easily integrated into modular filling station systems and containerised solutions.

We would be happy to advise you on the right compressed air solution for your hydrogen refuelling station.

Questions and Answers

What advantages do oil-free piston compressors offer at hydrogen refuelling stations compared with other types?
Oil-free piston compressors deliver clean compressed air free from oil and are particularly suitable for clearly defined pressure ranges and intermittent load profiles. Compared with other types of compressor, they can be integrated compactly and operate efficiently in applications involving medium flow rates and frequent start-stop cycles.
For which pressure ranges are Dürr Technik compressors suitable for use in hydrogen refuelling stations?
At hydrogen refuelling stations, compressed air is typically used for valve and control functions at medium pressures, often in the range of around 5 to 10 bar. Compressors from Dürr Technik are designed to meet these requirements and provide a stable supply of compressed air even during load changes. For the actual hydrogen refuelling process, however, high-pressure compressors are used.
Are Dürr Technik compressors suitable for continuous operation and frequent on-off cycles?
Yes. Dürr Technik’s oil-free piston compressors are designed for continuous operation (S1) as well as for cyclical load profiles. They operate reliably even with frequent start-stop cycles, such as those encountered in refuelling processes.
