CURING OF DENTAL 3D PRINTS

Nitrogen for curing 3D-printed parts in the manufacture of dental splints and dentures

What is 3D printing used for in dentistry?

In the field of dentistry, 3D printing has revolutionised the way treatment is provided. For patients, dentists and dental technicians, digital dentistry using 3D printing enables faster and more convenient treatment, as dental splints and dentures are produced directly on-site at the practice – in just one appointment.
The 3D printer precisely and delicately layers just enough material to create the desired shape. This saves material, time and money.

How does the process work?

Once a digital dental impression and a computer-aided design have been created, these are converted into a print file and 3D-printed. The printed objects are then automatically washed, dried and light-cured in the post-processing unit. Nitrogen is used here as a protective gas, enabling extremely effective post-curing. During the curing process, the nitrogen displaces the atmospheric oxygen in the polymerisation chamber / light-curing chamber. This ensures that the surface cures without forming a sticky inhibition layer. This has the following advantages:

  • Reduced cleaning work
  • harder, scratch-resistant surfaces
  • Smoother and more precisely fitting surfaces
  • Reduction in residual monomers and thus greater biocompatibility

Examples of 3D printing in dentistry

  • Bite splints
  • Orthodontic splints
  • Thermoformed model
  • Impression tray
  • Temporary restoration
  • Drilling template
  • Crown model
  • Bridge model

Why are nitrogen generators worthwhile in dental technology?

If the 3D printer is used regularly, it is worth investing in a nitrogen generator:

    Reliable:
No interruptions to the curing process due to gas cylinders running empty or needing replacing – the generator can be operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without interruption

    Compact & quiet:
The nitrogen generator can be easily installed at the point of use

    Cost-effective:
Quick payback thanks to lower running costs than those incurred by gas cylinders and their handling and delivery

    Convenient:
Simple nitrogen generation at the touch of a button
