THERMO-GRAVIMETRY

Nitrogen for thermogravimetric analysers

Nitrogen for thermogravimetric analysers (TGA): Why it is essential

Thermogravimetry – often referred to as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) – is an analytical method for determining changes in the mass of a sample as a function of temperature and time. To do this, the sample is placed in a heat-resistant crucible (e.g. platinum or aluminium oxide) and heated in a furnace to temperatures of up to 1,500 °C. A high-precision microbalance continuously measures the change in weight. This data enables conclusions to be drawn about material composition, decomposition processes, moisture content, combustion behaviour and other thermal properties.

How does the process work?

During the analysis, the sample chamber is purged with various gases. Pure nitrogen is usually used to prevent oxidation and thus avoid falsifying the results. A nitrogen generator serves as the N₂ source here, supplying nitrogen to the thermogravimetre via a supply line.

Typical samples in thermogravimetry

TGA is used in many industries – and the range of materials is correspondingly diverse:
  • Plastics & polymers
  • Food & biological samples
  • Wood & biomass
  • Coal & raw materials
  • Cement, ceramics & building materials
  • Soils & Minerals

For all these applications, nitrogen in the thermogravimetric analyser is essential for achieving precise, oxidation-free results

Why nitrogen is so important in a thermogravimetric analyser

During a TGA measurement, the sample chamber is continuously purged with gas. In most applications, pure nitrogen (N₂) is used. The reason: Advantages of nitrogen in a thermogravimetric analyser

  • Inert environment: Prevents oxidation and ensures unbiased measurement results.
  • Consistent gas quality: Stabilises the thermal environment and ensures reproducible analyses.
  • High purity prevents side reactions that could influence the measurement results. A reliable and cost-effective nitrogen supply – ideally via a nitrogen generator for TGA instruments – is therefore crucial for high-quality analysis.

How does a nitrogen generator for TGA work?

A nitrogen generator continuously supplies high-purity nitrogen directly on site. It replaces expensive gas cylinders and ensures that the thermogravimetric analyser is supplied with sufficient N₂ at all times. Typical benefits:

  • Continuous supply without the need to change cylinders
  • High purity (often > 99.999%) for precise TGA analyses
  • Cost-effectiveness due to lower running costs
  • Safety through pressure reduction and the elimination of heavy gas cylinders This makes a TGA nitrogen generator the ideal solution for laboratories that regularly carry out thermogravimetric measurements.
