WATER TREATMENT

Sustainable water treatment using oil-free compressed air

Clean, reliable and cost-effective

Water treatment is an essential step in ensuring water quality, particularly when it comes to removing unwanted metal ions such as iron and manganese. These metals can occur naturally in water and must be removed to prevent health problems and extend the service life of pipework and appliances. If water contains too much iron and manganese, it is not just the taste that is affected: this also leads to deposits and contamination in the water-carrying pipework, as well as bacterial growth. The Drinking Water Ordinance (TVO) therefore stipulates, amongst other things, specific limit values for iron, manganese and other chemical constituents in water. Our oil-free compressors can generate the compressed air required for water treatment, thereby ruling out any contamination with oil. Drinking water is treated using various physical, chemical or combined methods.

Water treatment processes: Iron

and manganese removal A tried-and-tested method for removing iron and manganese involves oxidising these metal ions, followed by their separation from the water. In this process, compressed air is introduced into the water, causing the oxygen it contains to come into contact with the iron and manganese ions dissolved in the water. This contact causes the metals to oxidise. These oxidised compounds are insoluble and form solid particles that can be easily removed from the water. The use of oil-free compressors is crucial here to ensure that no contaminants from oil enter the water.

Technical process for iron and manganese removal

  • Aeration: First, air is mixed into the raw water under pressure. This takes place in a special aeration tank or reactor, which ensures optimum mixing and oxygenation.
  • Oxidation: In this step, the iron and manganese ions are oxidised by the action of the oxygen supplied. The oxygen content in the water is continuously monitored to ensure that there is sufficient oxygen for the complete oxidation of the metal ions.
  • Separation: The resulting solid particles of iron and manganese oxides are then removed in a sedimentation tank or by filtration. In this process, the heavier particles settle at the bottom or are retained by filter media.
  • Post-treatment: The filtered water then undergoes further treatment steps, such as disinfection, to ensure that all impurities are removed and the water meets drinking water standards.Advantages of the methodEffectiveness: This method is highly effective at removing iron and manganese, even at high concentrations.

Advantages of the method

  • Sustainability: The use of oil-free compressors prevents the contamination of water with undesirable substances, thereby contributing to sustainable water treatment.
  • Cost-effectiveness: The combination of aeration and filtration enables cost-effective water treatment that can be used in both industrial and municipal settings.

Applications

These processes are widely used in various industries:

  • Drinking water supply: Ensuring compliance with drinking water quality standards by removing metals that are harmful to health.
  • Industrial water treatment: Protecting plant and processes that are sensitive to metal ions in water.
  • Irrigation systems: Preventing blockages and damage to irrigation equipment and pipes.
Through the use of modern technology and optimised processes, iron and manganese removal plays a key role in ensuring the supply of clean and safe water.

Ozonisation – as part of oil-free water treatment

A process for sterilisation and disinfection involving the addition of ozone as an oxidising agent. Oil-free compressed air, supplied by Dürr Technik’s compressors, is required and used for ozonisation. During ozonisation, the reactive nature of ozone causes bacteria and viruses to be inactivated very rapidly.

Pneumatic functions in water technology

Dürr Technik’s oil-free compressors are also used to actuate cylinders, for valve control and other pneumatic functions such as pressure equalisation.
