Oil-free compressors for the food industry

Clean and dry compressed air for quality and safety

In the food industry, food safety is the top priority. During the production, packaging and transport of food, strict legal guidelines and hygiene regulations must be adhered to in order to prevent contamination. This also applies to the quality of the compressed air used and its residual oil content.
Oil-free compressors are particularly well suited for use in the food industry: thanks to their oil-free technology, they ensure the quality of the compressed air in terms of oil content without any of the maintenance requirements of conventional oil-lubricated compressors. This makes it significantly easier for food manufacturers to comply with industry-specific standards.
Dürr Technik’s oil-free compressors are consistently designed to meet the requirements of the food industry. They reliably supply clean, oil-free compressed air, thereby ensuring stable process conditions for consistently high product quality – from production right through to the end user.

Our solutions for typical applications in the food industry

As a renowned manufacturer, Dürr Technik is synonymous with high product quality and specialisation in demanding applications. For the food industry, we offer tailored solutions for processes involving compressed air, nitrogen or vacuum.

Oil-free compressed air systems for the food industry

Our oil-free compressors supply clean compressed air for conveying foodstuffs through the production process, for filling and packaging systems, and for controlling valves. They are robust, low-maintenance and designed for reliable use in production environments where clean compressed air plays a key role.

Nitrogen for packaging, storage and preserving freshness

Our nitrogen generators are used in the food industry, for example, for modified atmosphere packaging, vacuum packaging and the storage and preservation of food. The systems are available with or without an integrated compressor and provide a reliable, continuous supply of nitrogen directly on site.View our nitrogen generators.

Vacuum pumps for packaging and food processing

Our oil-free vacuum pumps are used in food processing and packaging applications. They are low-maintenance, durable and quiet, and are suitable for reliable continuous operation, even under varying loads.

Product safety in food processing: the benefits of oil-free compressors

Oil-free compressed air compressors compress air without an internal oil source and reliably deliver oil-free compressed air. An oil-free compressor is therefore ideal for food processing and packaging, where clean and dry compressed air plays a key role in process safety and product quality. With oil-lubricated compressors, the oil particles present in the compressed air can be filtered out, but not completely. If the filter is not maintained properly, the proportion of oil particles in the compressed air can increase – with potential consequences for the product and the process.

Compressed air quality in food production: Classification in accordance with ISO 8573-1

The technical classification of compressed air quality is currently carried out in accordance with ISO 8573-1:2010 – based on particle, water and oil content. ISO 8573-1 is regarded as an internationally recognised standard for assessing compressed air quality and is also used as a reference in the food industry. Within a suitable overall system, oil-free compressors provide the structural basis for achieving oil-free compressed air quality in accordance with ISO 8573-1. It should be noted that the actual compressed air quality achieved does not depend solely on the compressor, but always on the entire system. Class 0 compressed air quality in terms of oil content (in accordance with ISO 8573-1, oil parameter) can only be achieved if the entire compressed air system – including filtration, pipework and maintenance – is designed accordingly.

Questions and Answers

What are the requirements for compressed air used in analytical instruments?
Analytical instruments require oil-free, dry and particle-free compressed air. These requirements usually correspond to the compressed air classes set out in ISO 8573-1, typically Class 1:3:1, in order to prevent measurement errors and contamination.
Why is oil-free compressed air particularly important for rheometers?
Rheometers often use compressed air for air bearings. Oil or moisture can impair the bearing’s function and adversely affect measurement accuracy.
Can a laboratory compressor supply power to several analysers?
Yes, if designed appropriately, a central compressed air station can supply several analysers. Alternatively, decentralised solutions such as the SICOLAB mini are a sensible option for individual devices.
What is the difference between SICOLAB and SICOLAB mini?
The SICOLAB is designed for higher flow rates and centralised applications, whilst the SICOLAB mini offers a compact solution for individual workstations and smaller analytical instruments.
Do oil-free compressors require a lot of maintenance?
Oil-free laboratory compressors significantly reduce maintenance requirements, as no oil changes are required and the risk of contamination is minimised.
