Hydrogen generators for analytical applications
The perfect alternative to helium
Hydrogen can perform just as well as helium in modern gas chromatography systems (GC and GC-MS). By using a hydrogen generator, laboratories can produce their own hydrogen at the touch of a button. This eliminates the need to rely on external suppliers. The impact of helium shortages and rising costs is reduced, whilst at the same time ensuring reliable and reproducible results for your gas chromatographic analyses.
The launch of our new Chromalytic H2 generators for hydrogen production complements our existing range of nitrogen and zero-air generators. This enables us to supply you with all three key gas types from a single source, thereby optimising workflows in your laboratory, as applications such as GC often require all three gases for the same instrument.
Furthermore, our hydrogen generators are available with a range of flow rates and drying methods, which have a direct impact on the dew point and hydrogen purity, to meet your specific requirements.
Your benefits at a glance

Why hydrogen instead of helium?
Helium is an important carrier gas for most GC and GC-MS applications. However, helium resources have been dwindling for years, as natural reserves are limited and non-renewable. This is leading to significant price increases and long lead times. Alternative gas options are therefore needed.
Hydrogen can work just as well as helium. Modern GC/GC-MS systems can be easily converted to use hydrogen as a carrier gas and calibrated efficiently.
With a hydrogen generator, laboratories can produce their own hydrogen in-house as and when required, thereby mitigating the effects of helium shortages and rising costs, whilst achieving reliable and reproducible chromatographic results.
Advantages of hydrogen over helium:
- Higher flow rates for faster analyses without compromising separation performance
- Hydrogen, as a carrier gas, is more sensitive than helium and allows elution at lower temperatures, which extends the service life of the chromatography column
- Lower costs with high availability, and the use of gas generators is possible
Hydrogen generators in the laboratory
Hydrogen generators are a safe, reliable and convenient alternative to bottled helium gas. Our models are tailor-made to meet your high-precision requirements, with a purity of up to 99.99996%.
Every application has different requirements regarding the dew point and purity of the hydrogen. For example, not all applications require a purity class of 99.99996%. For many applications, 99.9996% is sufficient.
Our hydrogen generators with regenerative permeation membrane dryers have a typical dew point of -23°C and a hydrogen purity of >99.9996%.
Our hydrogen generators, featuring a maintenance-free cold-dynamic regeneration dryer, have a typical dew point of -73°C and a hydrogen purity of >99.99996%.

Customised hydrogen generators for precision applications
For laboratory applications such as gas chromatography, three types of gas are usually required for the same instrument: nitrogen, zero-air and hydrogen.
The launch of our new Chromalytic hydrogen generators complements our existing range of nitrogen and zero-air generators. This enables us to supply you with all three key gas types from a single source.
As an alternative to costly helium cylinders, hydrogen generators require only deionised water and a standard mains power supply for continuous operation. The generators use a 100% titanium cell with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) to produce hydrogen gas from deionised water. Dry filtration stages are used to dry the gas.
We offer two types of hydrogen generators, which differ in their drying method. This has a direct impact on the dew point and hydrogen purity:
- 1. H2-100, H2-200 and H2-300
→ Regenerative permeation membrane dryer for a purity of up to 99.9996%
- 2. H2-100D, H2-300D, H2-500D and H2-1000D
→ Dual dynamic regeneration system for higher purity of up to 99.99996% and a lower dew point
A single hydrogen generator can supply up to 20 GC instruments and is available in various flow rates to meet the specific requirements of gas chromatographic analyses.
The compact design allows it to be installed close to the instruments in the laboratory, eliminating the need for long gas pipes and ensuring that the analysers are supplied with high-purity gas.
A state-of-the-art control system continuously monitors key operating parameters to ensure safe and consistent performance. Integrated sensors automatically shut down the generator in the event of leaks, contaminated water, low water pressure or overpressure.
Ideally suited for the following applications
Reliable and long-lasting hydrogen supply for analytical instruments, including
- gas chromatography (GC/GC-MS)
- Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
- Elemental analyser
